How to build an English course with books

Finding English books on Amazon is easy. However, identifying materials that form a coherent sequence requires more care. It is not only about choosing good titles. You also need to understand the purpose of each book in the plan.

As an English teacher, I do not recommend buying several books without a clear order. First, you need a main course. Then, practise the same content, consult grammar when necessary, expand your vocabulary gradually and move forward only when your foundation is secure.

QUICK ANSWER

The best combination for starting

English for Everyone Level 1 Course Book + English for Everyone Level 1 Practice Book

These two books are enough to begin a structured plan. The Course Book introduces the content, while the Practice Book reinforces each unit. You can add support books later when you actually need them.

How to use the Course Book and Practice Book

The Course Book introduces the content and organises explanations, vocabulary, structures, reading and listening. The Practice Book reinforces and extends the practice of that content.

First study the unit in the Course Book. Then complete the matching unit in the Practice Book. Avoid studying random pages without considering the relationship between the two volumes.

The role of grammar

Advanced Grammar in Use should work as a support book. Consult a unit when a structure appears in the main course or when a recurring mistake needs clarification.

Do not try to finish the entire book quickly. For independent study, choose an edition with answers because correction is part of the learning process.

When to add a vocabulary book

English Vocabulary in Use Advanced is useful for expanding your range. It becomes more productive after you have built a secure foundation with the main course.

Study a few units each week. Notice the examples, pronounce the words and create sentences related to your routine. Language learned in context is easier to retrieve than an isolated list.

Mistakes that make book-based study less effective

Buying too many books at once

Begin with the main pair and add support books according to your needs.

Starting with material that is too advanced

Material that is far above your level reduces understanding and makes consistency harder.

Buying an edition without answers

In self-study, correction helps you identify what needs to be reviewed.

Studying grammar only

Grammar helps, but it does not replace audio, reading, vocabulary and communication.

Ignoring the audio

Listening is part of building pronunciation and listening comprehension.

Not correcting the exercises

Completing many pages without reviewing mistakes creates a false sense of progress.

Studying unrelated books

Disconnected materials may repeat topics and leave important gaps.

Moving forward without revision

Before the next stage, revisit units and check whether you can actively use the content.

Expecting exercises alone to develop conversation

Speaking also requires answers, interaction and correction.

This plan may suit you if...

  • You are an adult learner with a solid intermediate foundation.
  • You prefer organised study materials.
  • You can maintain a weekly routine.
  • You need a clear sequence.
  • You prefer to buy books gradually.

When books may not be enough

Some learners need pronunciation correction, rapid-response practice, conversation, individual guidance or help maintaining consistency.

In that case, books still provide structure, while guided support can develop skills that depend on interaction and feedback.

W

My recommendation as an English teacher

The best starting point is to combine English for Everyone Course Book Level 1 Beginner with the matching Practice Book. Essential Grammar in Use can serve as support, while Vocabulary in Use can be added after the initial foundation.

Buy Level 2 when the first level is nearly complete and the main content is secure. Buying fewer books and using them properly is better than collecting materials without a sequence.

Frequently asked questions

Can I improve my English independently using books?

A suitable sequence can build grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening and writing. However, speaking also requires practice, correction and opportunities for interaction.

Which English book should I buy first?

For this sequence, begin with English for Everyone Course Book Level 1 Beginner. It works as the main course and introduces the content reinforced in the matching Practice Book.

Do I need both the Course Book and Practice Book?

The Course Book can be used alone, but the Practice Book provides additional exercises that help consolidate each unit. Together they form a more complete self-study route.

Is Essential Grammar in Use suitable for beginners?

Yes. It is especially useful for learners from A1 to B1 who need to clarify grammar structures. It should support the main course rather than replace it.

Which Grammar in Use edition should I buy?

Independent learners should choose an edition suitable for their level and containing answers. For this plan, Advanced Grammar in Use with Answers is the recommended reference.

Do the books include audio material?

Some editions provide audio through an app, website or digital resource. Since this can vary by edition, check the product description and included resources before purchasing.

When should I begin Level 2?

Begin when Level 1 is complete or when you can review its main units without relying constantly on explanations. Moving too early may leave gaps.

Are books alone enough to develop conversation?

Books provide important vocabulary and structures, but conversation requires spoken production. Practise answers aloud, interaction, pronunciation and spontaneous communication as well.

The key is the sequence

You do not need to buy every book at once. Begin with Course Book Level 1 and the matching Practice Book. Add grammar, vocabulary and the next level according to your progress.

In this way, the books stop being isolated materials and become parts of an organised course.
